THE HOUSE

How it is arranged.

Villa Monaco is built around one room. Living, dining and kitchen run together for twelve metres through the centre of the house, with folding glass along both long sides. Open them up and the room becomes a covered pavilion, with a deck on either side and the breeze moving straight through.

The bedrooms sit in two wings on either side of it, two to the west and three to the east. Each wing feels like its own house, so a family can take one and their friends the other, and nobody hears anybody after midnight. All five bedrooms have their own bathrooms, and a powder room serves guests.

Out by the pool, a sunken seating pit with curved built-in seating is where evenings end up. And a staircase leads to a private deck on the roof, the highest point of the house: watching the cloud roll across the valley in the monsoon, or the stars come out on a clear winter night.
